Actress Helen Kane, the inspiration for the Betty Boop cartoons, never received royalties or credit for them. A striking and unique performer who began in Vaudeville, she was too 20s for the 30s and her career, sadlly, fizzled.

ReplyDeleteThey're both awesome!
ReplyDeleteHelen Kane was a Broadway star and still continued onwards on stage after the whole Betty Boop trial (1934). Betty Boop started out a caricature of Kane in Dizzy Dishes (1930) as a out of work actor, which was a reference to Kane who had been dropped by Paramount in 1920. Betty copyed Kane from all her films. The real bad thing was that 2 of the voices were hired as Helen Kane look-a-likes and sound-a-likes. Those two women were Bonnie Poe and Mae Questel.
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting and both of them are just so amazing.
ReplyDeleteJust as pretty as the cartoon Betty.
